It was time to take an excursion and get off the hotel property. I'd had three days of languid lounging, swimming, and reading. After breakfast, Josh took the kids down to the club, then he and I got in the car for the day's excursion. We considered taking the kids along, but they wanted to go to the club rather than go for a drive with us. Today, we signed them up for the lunch program so we could return to the hotel in the afternoon.

We drove into the town of Palau, located the port, and arrived just in time to take the car ferry over to
Isola Maddalena. It's only a 15 minute passage to the Island, part of the
Arcipeligo di La Maddalena. The main port town was not particularly special, but we drove off the boat, through the town , and over a low bridge to Isola Caprera. Caprera is a National Park and part of the archipelago. It has pine forests with pine vegetation of all varieties, set in a natural, rocky landscape with all types of incredible stone formations. The island is sprinkled with natural coves and bays ideal for swimming. In fact, there are so many inviting place to stop along the road and take a dip, that we swam in no less than three coves. We also stopped under a canopy of tall pine trees (like the Redwoods of Pine that create a shady canopy), bought cold beers from a roadside stand, and had a picnic (of sandwiches packed at breakfast). It was rustic and absolutely spectacular on this island. No beach clubs with chairs for rent. Just people getting away from it all with their own umbrellas and towels on the sand. One of the bays in which we swam also sported a few nice yachts including one sailboat that must have been 85 feet long parked off shore.
We drove back to Isola Maddalena and enjoyed a gelato before boarding the 3:15 ferry back to Palau. Just in time because Avery was ready for his nap. Back at the hotel, I picked the kids up from the club and we all spent some time in our bungalow -- out of the sun, and in the air-conditioning.
Avery took a super long nap, but Josh accompanied the girls back to the beach for a pre-dinner swim. Soon it was time for dinner. The kids rehearsed tonight for the spectacolo of High School Musical that they would put on tomorrow. Another beautiful and full day in Sardegna.
