La festa de le mamme

Josh let me sleep in. It was after 9:30 by the time I woke up, and I only woke up because I heard the girls upstairs - when they had just woken up. So we all had a late breakfast.

We were all invited to Francesco's birthday party today. Francesco, the son of two of our dinner guests last night, was turning four; and we were celebrating in the Villa Massimo. The Villa Massimo is a smallish playground, but there is a cute merry-go-round, an indoor play area, and an outdoor inflatable/jumper thing that the kids love. It was a beautiful day; sunny and low 70's. We enjoyed meeting Francesco's grandmothers (both sides) and talking about Italy with them. All the kids seemed to have a good time whether it be swinging, eating, or chatting.

After the party, we weren't sure what to do next. Without a plan, we came home. I think everyone was still tired from yesterday. Since the weather was so gorgeous (after so much rain this past week), I whipped up some leftovers and made some salads and we all sat in the garden for a late lunch. Later, we would disperse. Josh watched the Giro d'Italia on TV. Avery decided to grab a couple of pillows and take a nap -- on the floor under the piano! Charlotte thought she wanted to watch the Giro with her dad, but fell asleep on the sofa (perhaps to the sounds of Josh's snoring). Olivia was "bored" and did her homework before joining me on the upstairs terrace to chat. I lounged and read a book, waiting for Olivia to join me.

While the other kids were still asleep, Josh took Olivia for a bike ride at 6pm. It was still sunny, bright and warm. It seems the entire day was shifted back a couple of hours. By the time they returned, everone was awake. Since today is Mother's Day AND a Sunday, so we had to go out for pizza. But rather than sticking to our neighborhood haunt, I wanted to go into town for a passeggiatta with the kids. So, we drove into centro to take a stroll, have some dinner near the Pantheon, savour a gelato by the the Trevi fountain, and take in the sights.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!
