165 days in Rome

I'm so proud of Charlotte and how she's not only embraced Italy but the Italian language. This morning in our Italian class, after reading a story, she was asked to recount it in her own words. I was so impressed by her fluency, I actually started to tear up. Of course, Charlotte noticed and embarrassedly said "Mom, are you crying?" Ivana, as a mother, knew exactly the emotions I was feeling. In any case, I'm so happy for Charlotte.

Afterwards, Josh and I took a drive out to Fiumicino to visit the folks at Peugot Open Europe. It's already been 165 days in Italy (time flies), and it was time to turn in our car. Fortunately, we were able to lease another car for 165 days under my name. Unfortunately (and we knew this upon executing the lease the month before) the same Peugot 3008 was not available. So now we have a 308Wagon. I didn't know I was such a car snob, but I noticed the differences right away. The 3008 is such a well-designed car and has many more "upscale" features such as tinted rear windows, more storage space in the second row, electronic parking brake, and side view mirrors that collapse when the car is locked from the outside. Anyways, I'm sure we'll make the adjustment to our new wagon soon enough.

Realizing that we've been living here almost half a year made me reflect on all the things I like about Rome.
1. It's a beautiful city -- the fountains, the architecture, the grandeur
2. The history -- there is almost an endless amount of things to see and learn
3. The food and wine -- no explanation required
4. The irreverence -- it's essentially an anarchy. Rules are made but not enforced giving the people a kind of power. This can be good or bad. For example, it's good because you can park (or double park as is often the case) wherever you want. Or, it's bad when no one picks up their dog's poop.
5. Bidets -- standard in any residential bathroom; they have many applications

Separately, in another blog, I will try to reflect on all the things I miss about living in Chicago...but right now, I like it here.
